PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has launched a Piggery Scheme under the broader Presidential Livestock Inputs Scheme which is intended to enhance livelihoods of farmers.

The President said 10 000 piglets will be distributed with beneficiaries of the scheme receiving 2 sows and 1 boar.
Further the beneficiaries are expected to pass on the progeny to the next approved farmers.

“The Piggery Scheme we are launching today is within the Framework of a broader Presidential Livestock Input Support Programme which includes a Heifer Pass on Scheme and will have a bias towards beneficiaries in rural areas. The Scheme will complement on-going Command Livestock Programme covering cattle, goats, sheep, poultry, pigs and fisheries”.

The scheme design recognises that small livestock such as pigs are potentially important sources of livelihoods given that a well-managed one sow unit can have two farrowing, producing more than 20 piglets a year”.

President Mnangagwa also commended the partnership between Government and the private sector in rolling out the piggery scheme.

“It is indeed a pleasure to have among us the supplier of the piglets, TRIPLE C which is an organisation that is renowned for the quality breeding and production of pigs. Their important and progressive involvement in the implementation of our policies is in line with my Goverments call for more Private-Public Partnerships to accelerate our national development”.
