Govt funds soya bean production
Funding production of soya beans under the command farming programme is set to boost output coupled with a producer price of US$610 per tonne.
Soya bean production will also increase nitrogen fixation in soil in a development that will enhance productivity said Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development, Dr Joseph Made.
Soil scientist, Dr Sheunseu Mupepereki welcomed measures to fund soya bean production adding it will benefit industry as it is a key raw material.
Zimbabwe requires about 220 000 tonnes of soya bean per year but production fell to 35 000 tonnes in 2016/17 with US$125 million being spent on imports.
28 818 hectares of soya beans has so far been subscribed by 5 268 growers under the command scheme while registration is ongoing.
