A CHIREDZI farmer lost his car and bales of tobacco to armed bogus police officers along Glen Eagles Road in Harare on Monday.

Blessing Mapasure (28) of Chiredzi Prison Farm Camp was robbed of a Nissan Atlas truck registration (ADG 7378) and 25 bales of tobacco by five people, one of whom was in police uniform.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the incident, urging farmers to transport their golden leaf during the day.

“Police are investigating a robbery case where a Chiredzi farmer lost his vehicle and 25 bales of tobacco,” said Insp Chazovachii

“The incident took place at 2230hrs along Glen Eagles Road.

“The victim was reported to have been ordered to stop by a Honda Fit driver with a man in police uniform seated on the passenger seat.

“The Honda Fit had five people and the one who was in police uniform and another in civilian attire disembarked from the vehicle and identified themselves to the victim that they were police officers.

“Upon learning of the number of bales the farmer had, the two produced pistols and ordered everyone who was in the truck to leave.

“Three other people disembarked from the Honda Fit vehicle and got into the truck and drove away.

“The alleged police officers returned to their Honda Fit and followed the truck, leaving the farmer and his crew stranded,” said Insp Chazovachii.

He said police have intensified patrols throughout the province and urged people to be wary of bogus police officers.
